About Us

“the thing is…” is an online magazine of cultural commentary and creative writing. A hub for contemporary arts and culture, TTI relies upon contributions from its readers to supplement the material produced by our regular team, creating an interactive, lively forum where no area for debate is off limits.

We aim to update the site regularly, providing a constant stream of information, opinion and intellectual tidbits for our readers, but we occasionally publish a collection of articles under the banner of a single feature. Recent features have included one on the emergent VJing scene and the ‘quarter life crisis’.

If you’re interested in contributing something to the thing is… then get in touch with us:

If you would like to write something for us drop a message to write [at] thethingis.co.uk

If you would like to get involved with something to do with images or video get in touch at images [at] thethingis.co.uk

If you want to know anything more about us, or put your music on the player, use jimmy [at] thethingis.co.uk

Submission guidelines:

Sending us example work and asking if there’s anything we’d like you to write about is OK, but don’t be sending us your CV. We’re not that kind of set-up. We’re also very keen to see any specific ideas or articles you might have already. We’ve found that working with people who both know and are passionate about their subject produces the best writing.

Our editorial team offers critical feedback on submissions where possible and we always give a detailed credit, including a link to your other work, where possible. We like to think that by pairing an illustrator with a written piece the resulting article is more than the sum of its creative parts, and that both contributors benefit from a satisfying symbiosis, not to mention a more persuasive portfolio piece.

Editorial policy:

Whilst every effort is taken to ensure the factual accuracy of the site, we are a small independent team without the resources of a large magazine. If you spot an error or something that shouldn’t be there, please contact us and we will rectify any errors as soon as possible. We also publish a lot of opinions, some of them negative. We’re not a reviews magazine and it isn’t our policy to pass judgement. We want to provoke a lively debate. If you disagree with an opinion espoused by one of our writers, please don’t take it up with us, but do feel free to either add your own opinions in the comments section or, as people have in the past, write in with your own response.
